Coming to Realize Some Things

At the end of January we will have been in Malawi for four months. We quickly learned that we are way out of our league. I would describe myself as a Jack of many technical trades, none of which are actually useful here. I’m not joking about that; our church doesn’t have lights, sound, video, a website, an email account, an “Our Church” or a “Grace Project,” and most of the time not even electricity. My AV skills have been rendered utterly useless, but I think I’m learning that being here is not all about what can I do.

Lisa and I got married two years ago; we had good jobs, and we just bought a house. We actually wanted to purchase a vacant plot and get a new house built with the help of Ware Design Build (www.waredesignbuild.com). But then we had to drop the plan as it was time to start saving and investing for the future, maybe look for a rental property, a good mutual fund, and of course upgrade everything: phones, TVs, cars, computers, kitchen knives and stuff. Believe me, all of those things are still incredibly appealing to me, and I am not in any way condemning those pursuits. We definitely wanted to get stuck in and look to improve ourselves in every way possible for the future, initially, we had a look at various uk stock trading options in the effort to build our income streams, we started out great. However, Lisa and I decided we might be okay without certain things for a bit, while we were wanting to help others. Once we decide to dive back into that life and start looking to improve our financial future, after bettering others lives’ of course, Lisa and I will more than likely start to look at something such as these credit sesame reviews, in order to start building our credit and financial standing back up again.

So here we are again left with this question, ‘what are we doing here?’

I’ll be honest, not a day goes by that I don’t ask myself that very question, but as we spend more time here, God is revealing more to us. I’m starting to see first hand that it’s not always the worthy that He calls, but more often the willing. We are here because we could be here. There were reasons not to come, but none that were actually good enough to listen to. We are not qualified, but as we see this place with our own eyes, we realize who is? How could we be prepared, how could we be ready for this? I don’t think we could be. I think our job is just to go.

  1. Super Edifying! We totally agree! We love your transparency; so awesome; we love you guys very much! See you this summer! Paul and Laety (Benin)

    1. Thank you Laety! It helps me to get those thoughts out of my head and on to paper, I’m glad they could be edifying. We love you and Paul to very much. Lisa and I think about you often in our prayers. See you in the summer!

  2. Awesome blogpost, Matt! You know, Bob and I were married just over two years ago. And we have all those things…jobs, house, rental property, 401k, upgraded everything (well, not to YOUR standard, I mean my cell phone doesn’t have a crank on it anymore). Yet we find ourselves saying the same thing, “what are we doing here?” There are many reasons to leave, but none of them compelling enough to listen to. So…we stay. And believe God.
By the way, did you know the current occupants of your house are prone to giving wild parties? We went there for a Christmas shindig. Your house is awesome! Great location.
I love reading your posts, keep it up!

    1. Thank You Holly, that is a great perspective and I think staying is sometimes the more difficult thing to do. My Dad, who I will speak too about these wild parties, is one of those who is being faithful to stay. Malawi is wide open and Bob would make a killing here, every single car is broken in some way or another:)

Im glad you like the blog, we are having fun with it.

      Matt(Logged in as Lisa)
